The Autumn Amble

Coastal Views Galore

By Gary Carroll, Steve and Jenny Walker, Kristin Raw and Becca Lunnon

The Autumn Amble Metrogaine revisits the Kingborough area on Sunday 24th May.

Starting at the Kingborough Community Hub, explore the beaches, bushland, urban parks and trails and enjoy the coastal views of this spectacular area. This is a question and answer event for those on foot. Head out in teams of 2 to 5 people and answer as many questions as you can in 4 hours.

The map takes in a diverse mix of coastal paths, bushland reserves, sporting facilities and suburban streetscapes. From the spectacular views along the Alum Cliffs to the sandy shores of Kingston and Blackmans Bay and the dry bushland of Peter Murrell reserve, there's a diverse and rewarding range of terrain to discover along the way.

Maps and questions are given out at registration starting at 8am, for a 10am to 2pm event.

Entries are now open.

2026 Event Volunteers Needed

By Gary Carroll

We have had a good response to our call for key organisers for our 2026 events. Don’t feel that you have missed out however, as there are still more than a few opportunities to assist. In particular:

  • On-the-day help with the Autumn Amble metrogaine (24th May). This would be for just a few hours to help with marshalling, scoring and data entry.
  • On-the-day help with the Paddy Pallin Winter Wander bush 6-hour (26th July). We’ll also need help setting up camp, admin duties and checkpoint collection in the days after the event.
  • Vetters are needed for the Eastern Shore metrogaine (6th Sept).
  • Vetters are needed for the bush 6 and 12-hour being held in late November.

Please see the 2027 Australasian Rogaining Championships Update article below, as we are also looking for volunteers for this event.

If you feel the need to volunteer, or are even a little curious – send a message using the contact form.

The Paddy Pallin Winter Wander

By Bass Burgess and Gary Carroll

Like the ad campaign says – Become a Winter Person.

RT are running a 6-hour and 3-hour bush event near Kempton on Sunday 26th of July. This event has received generous sponsorship from Paddy Pallin which will be used to lower the entry fees.

Paddy Pallin is a major supporter of grass-roots outdoor activities Australia-wide, including rogaining. This event will have an emphasis on newcomers to rogaining, but will still be a regular event with lots of checkpoints to visit and hills to climb. There will be a training session run by RT, but organised through Paddy Pallin.

More on this event and the training in a future newsletter.

Thanks to Geoff Powell, Tara Powell and Richard Ward for taking on the setting and vetting roles.

2026 Australasian Championships

Entries are now open for the 2026 Australasian Rogaining Championships & Intervarsity Championships, 29th - 30th August at Nundubbermere near Stanthorpe Queensland. This is about 250 kms southwest of Brisbane near the NSW border.

See the website for event information, photos, details of the bus service and merch!

NAMSF Funding

Each year, a travel bursary is provided from the Nigel Aylott Memorial Sports Foundation (NAMSF) to cover the travel costs of one team from each state to compete in the Intervarsity Championships. Team members must be students at the same Tasmanian tertiary institution. The funding covers the cost of flights, coach transport, and accommodation (if necessary) for a team of two to compete. Team members are responsible for additional costs, such as the event entry fee.

Further information about the 2026 Australian Intervarsity Championships and the background to the NAMSF can be found here. There will be details of the application process in a future RT newsletter.

2027 World Champs Bulletin 1

The World Champs are returning to Australia on Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th of September 2027, to be held in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.

Don't think that this isn't an event for you. The event is open to all rogainers, from beginners to elites. The scenery is spectacular. The terrain and vegetation allows for open and fast travel.

More information, photos, a video, and Bulletin 1 are now available at wrc2027.rogaining.au

2027 Australasian Rogaining Championships. Update April 2026.

The Event Date

Tasmania will host ARC2027 on the weekend of 17 & 18 April 2027. So mark your calendars now for some navigation fun, or to refine your partner selection for the World Champs being held in South Australia later that year.

We are planning to open entries in early November.

As an Australasian Champs, this will be a 24-hour event, but we will be running a concurrent non-championships 6-hour event.

The Event Name

After many suggestions, pondering and to-ing and fro-ing, we have settled on the event name being the Tiers of Joy. We have someone working on a logo based on the event name and it looks promisingly awesome! We’ll definitely let our interstate competitors know what the Tassie definition of “tiers” is.

The Event Location

The event location has been selected, with some exploratory trips to meet the landowners completed late last year. The best hint we can give right now is that it’s near Ross in the Midlands region.

Call for Volunteers!

Volunteers are the key to all our successful rogaines! Their roles are very much valued and appreciated. We have an immediate need for an event secretary, and help with social media and merchandise. We also need assistance with safety and water patrols, hash house camp set up, event administration, first aid, bus transport coordination and photography. We’ll need several general volunteers who can assist with anything over the event weekend. Many volunteer positions would not exclude you from entering the event.

Volunteers get to socialise on the weekend, meals are provided, and you get to meet and make new friends. Participants are welcome to bring their non-competing partners and friends to give us a hand.

This is an excellent opportunity to take part in organising and managing a significant national rogaining event. If you are enthusiastic and energetic, have a chat with us by emailing

What’s next?

The base map has been made, and detailed course planning has begun. Initial fieldwork is the next big step for the organising team.

See you at the next tier,
China Mug - ARC2027 Event Coordinator

2026 AGM Report

By Peter Tuft

If you missed the Rogaining Tas AGM on 21 February you missed maybe 20 min of formalities and also a very social couple of hours with other rogainers and some tasty food. The formalities were ... a bit formal but brief. We have a slightly rearranged committee of mostly the same people, listed below. Gary Carroll presented the president’s report and also (on behalf of Ross Kelly who was unable to attend) presented the treasurer’s report (see below) which shows Rogaining Tas to be in a comfortable financial position.

There was one item of general business at the end - nomination of Gary Carroll for life membership. There was no need for debate, the motion was carried by acclamation. The citation can be read here.

The committee now comprises:

  • President, Gary Carroll
  • Vice President, Bernard Walker
  • Secretary, Peter Tuft
  • Treasurer, Ross Kelly

There are a further six people on the committee:

  • Nick Bowden
  • Sebastian Burgess
  • Liz Canning
  • NicolĂ« Carpenter
  • Karen Wild-Allen
  • Stephen Yam

TREASURER’S REPORT

By Ross Kelly

2025 was a successful year financially for RT, with a surplus of just over $3,000 compared with around  $1,800 in the previous period of 15 months. The result was especially noteworthy as we only held 3 rogaines in 2025 compared with 5 in the previous 15 month period.

The Committee aims to generate sufficient revenue from shorter metro events to enable longer events to be held at the lowest possible entry fee, given the much higher cots of holding longer, more remote bush events.

In fact, despite our intentions, the opposite happened!  The 24-hour Stagger On rogaine had the largest cash surplus of around $5,500 compared with around $1,700 for each of the two metro events.  This happened because the number of Stagger On entries far exceeded expectations, particularly due to having over 30 interstate entries. Also resulting in the disparity in revenues are the higher take-up of junior and other concessions in the shorter metro events compared with the 24 hour event. These figures are before the allocation of some $3,000 of insurance costs.

Surpluses from events are essential, as we don’t have separate membership subscriptions, and have to cover the cost of our physical equipment and IT assets, all of which are subject to wear and tear in our outdoor situations.  Our accumulated funds of $23,000 provide a buffer against any contingencies arising from out holding of the Australasian Championships next year.

As provided for by the Associations Incorporation Act and our own constitution, the accounts are not audited, but are available for review if requested by members.  Our banking procedures require that every transaction be separately authorized by two committee members.
