Back in 2020 when we were locked down with COVID, I had a good idea that turned into a fair amount of work. Before they were lost to mould, silverfish or just plain lost we should gather electronic copies of all the RT event maps for posterity. This would be an asset for future event organisers, and of general interest.
This project is now a reality, and you can view almost all the RT event maps and their locations on the RT website. Look here under Event Results -> Past Event Map Bank.
The map quality varies. Most of the maps pre-2012 are scans, and will have whatever routes and scribbles were made on the map at the time. More recent maps are have been generated from their digital source.
To view an event map, you will need to either:
- select it from the list of PDF maps or
- select Open in CalTopo to get an interactive map, then select the event's hash house shown with a circled H symbol, and then follow the links in the dialog that pops up.
Keep in mind that most of the bush maps are on private property, and having the event map does not imply that you have access permission.
I have found records of 86 RT rogaines since our first event held in 1992, and have maps for 80 of these. Can you help this project? I am looking for these maps.
